Practices in Thomasville, N.C.
Stephen Sebastian is continually experimenting with unfamiliar materials and tools in an effort to keep his work compelling. His paintings maintain a strong visual structure, but are fluid, rhythmic and expressive. Sebastian practice is extensive. His work always starts with preliminary sketches, and he often utilizes technology in his preliminary steps toward his finished work. A graphic tablet serves as his sketch pad, and digital mixing tools allow him to determine his palette before the brush hits the canvas. Shepherd is also a highly regarded printmaker, employing techniques such as aquatinting, mezzotint, burnishing and line etching.
